Episode 208

Be Here Now

In Duncan Trussell’s celebrated cartoon The Midnight Gospel, Duncan’s character “Clancy” finds himself on a strange bus ride, unsure if he is dead or alive, or if he might be going to heaven or hell. Clancy turns to the passenger next to him with a mouthful of confused questions. The passenger happens to be Ram Dass, who utters his famous phrase “just be here now”.

We can find very quickly that so many of life’s problems are insubstantial when we allow the future and the past to be in their place, and simply focus on the task at hand, whether it be working or resting.

What do you need to do? All you need to do is be here now.

Welcome beautiful thinkers.

Im still out here in sunny Acapulco Guerrero. I was thinking about how that wonderful phrase from Ramm Dass which is Be Here Now. He wrote that book about it and I still haven’t read it.

I’d like to read it but even just the phrase is so powerful.

If you watch the midnight gospel which is the cartoon on Netflix based on Duncan Trussells family hour podcast, the final episode….well I am really spoiling this.

It’s not exactly a story based tv show, there’s not much to spoil…what happens in the final episode is Duncan’s character Clancy is kind of dying is maybe dead already traveling on a bus to the underworld.

And he turns to the guy next to him and asks “what’s going on, what do I do about this? Where am I? What do I do?” And the fellow next to him happens to be Ramm Dass and he just says “Be Here Now” in his comforting voice and that’s all you ever have to do.

Its this simple technique, the answer to so many things. As it says in the Way of the Samurai, the samurai the masters the present moment masters everything.

And I was thinking about sitting here I made myself some breakfast, I put granola and oats into a bowl with banana and coconut milk on top. Sat down and said grace, thank you lord for this beautiful food.

Almost immediately after the prayer I started thinking about what I’m doing today, a workshop I am preparing for. A performance that I will give tomorrow, all these myriad of things on my mind distracting me in some sense from the current moment but it’s really simple, all I have to do right now is just be here.

There’s no grand plan, there’s no puzzle to solve. There’s no question of life. I don’t have to have all the answers for everything.

Right now, sitting here, doing what I am doing or recording this podcast, that’s all I have to do. Of course some take that out of context, what about planning for the future? You’re living for the moment.

No, not living for the moment, living in the moment so when the time is for planning, go ahead and plan.

When you are enjoying breakfast, just enjoy breakfast and there’s nothing wrong with that.

That’s why they say “be here now.”

Have a wonderful day, thank you for exercising presence. Perhaps today something will get your attention and you think you can be very present in the moment.

I don’t know if you can hear in the background there are birds chirping, maybe that can be a sign. Perhaps after a couple of cars pass there’s that moment where things are calm and you can also be calm.

Have a wonderful day.
