Episode 209

Its Wonderful to Be Alone

It’s nice to go to sleep alone, to wake up alone, to go through your morning routine as you planned it, without need of any thought of how it will affect someone else. There you are alone in your ideas, feeling your own presence.

Sitting with a journal, you can write what is on your mind, whether it be mundane or profound. If anyone were to find it and judge you for what you had written, their condemnation would be irrelevant. What you wrote was for you, and you alone.

Even soldiers were once taught to retreat within their own minds, to see a home of their own construction in the event that they were captured as prisoners of war. With practice, they would clearly visualize their doors, their library, their desk, stepping inside to gain that precious gift of solitude.

Welcome beautiful thinkers.

Im still out here in Acapulco Guerrero and last night hanging out with so many wonderful people at Casa Creative.

My friend Arielle set it up with all sorts of cool people staying there and a DJ and they’re doing karaoke, face reading workshops and all kinds of stuff.

I was having a good time there and I would leave and go off and have lunch and sit with myself and a book and I thought how wonderful to be alone.

Especially last night leaving, getting home and getting to sleep early not joining in too much with the festivities but enjoying my own company.

I like to share a bit with someone but there is a certain obligation or sense of responsibility when someone sleeps with you in your bed and you wake up and maybe you can’t do your routine exactly as you like because you want to make them feel comfortable or prepare them breakfast whatever it is that you wanna do to make them comfortable.

Being in your own presence without judgement without responsibility or anything other than yourself. All you have to do is allow yourself to be comfortable. Enjoy your thoughts.

One of my favorite things to do in the world is sit in a cafe and write such a simple thing and that’s part of the reason it’s so beautiful.

No responsibility. No expectation.

I write and not doesn’t matter what comes out on the page. It doesn’t matter if they’re complex thoughts or mundane thoughts, trying to work my way through what’s goin on in my life.

It doesn’t matter if I’m describing something I have seen thousands of times before, maybe just noticing it for the first time with new eyes.

It doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter my private journal is just for me. No one needs to see it or judge it. If they did, if they saw it or read it then their judgement would be irrelevant because these things are for me.

Of course people use selfish as a pejorative but caring for yourself is very important. Enjoying your own company, being with yourself and your own thoughts. Free to explore solitude, something so precious, so many of us have the privilege to enjoy it in one form or another.

Even as soldiers who might as infantry be captured as prisoners of war, they were taught visualization techniques to where even if you’re sleeping in a hole with a 100 other men then you can still build a palace within your mind, imagining your own house. Visualizing each room and seeing what you will find in there. Fountain pen, your life’s work in the mahogany drawer in the drawing room by the bookshelf to the left of the front door.

Your mind is still a palace, it doesn’t matter the circumstances, you can find that solitude. That wonderful peace, that wonderful place, that wonderfulness to be alone.

Thank you for finding the time to be alone. Thank you for enjoying solitude and life precious gifts.
