Episode 334

Transcend the Cycle

When we practice introspection, or go to a therapist or a coach, we might begin to notice certain patterns in our lives. We might even identify clearly that there is an unhelpful cycle, analyze its parts, and know what is coming next at each stage.

However, knowing the cycle isn’t really enough for us to improve our behavior. We might actually watch the cycle continue, knowing exactly what is going to happen, but still not knowing how to prevent it. We pick up another cigarette or continue to binge on sugary foods, even knowing the consequences.

If we try forcefully to break the cycle, that might serve to affirm its power, and again continue it, though in a modified form.

What will really help us is transcending the cycle, moving into some new pattern of behavior previously unseen. When we do that, sometimes all of our previous problems fade into the background.

Note: In the episode Kurt says Nick Hinton was the creator of the Fatum/Randonaut project. Actually Nick was an early member of the community, but not the creator.

Welcome beautiful thinkers, this is how your life is already wonderful.

Let’s talk about transcending the cycle. I used to hang out on a couple of forums on reddit. Some of them were really interesting, this one I really liked for a long time was called Glitch in the Matrix.

A lot of people get on there and get on there to share these fascinating stories about really unusual things that have happened to them, some they cannot explain. Sometimes it’s a simple thing like disappearing object phenomenon.

You put down your watch in a specific spot or in an extreme situation you put your lighter into the safe and the next time you look the object is gone. The time after that the lighter appears.

These unusual things I don’t make strong things about their veracity but they are very fascinating and sometimes they do have these rings of truth to them. Sometimes it sounds like they’re exaggerating, like this person is trying to make up a story for effect.

In other cases they are being quite plain with their story, just telling it literally as if it’s a recount of facts.

The extreme cases are like someone walks into a diner in the middle of nowhere and it’s two bothers and two people in the diner start mistaking them for a different two brothers.

Then they realize later they can’t find the diner on the map and the people in the diner know things about the people they couldn’t have known. Very freaky stories.

One common thing was a lot of people would go through the forum just like I did and read a lot of these stories looking, what is the common thread?

A lot of the time the common thread, one important thing these have in common was that it was normally when someone was doing something outside of their routine. Or if someone was going to do their routine and suddenly went in another direction.

Going to take the regular route and instead take the toll road and find another path to work. Something like this. There is another community called the randonauts and they try to take advantage of this principle. Randonauts was started by this fellow Nick Hinton. I will have to get him on the podcast sometime to hear his story.

Nick invented this process, a random location generator using what is a quantum number generator. This is the most random thing people could come up with it generates thousands of random locations where the randomness is condensed and it tells you that location. What happens when people go to these spots is sometimes they are very close to their home or places where they normally go.

Just a little different, maybe on the other side of the road, or the other side of the park they usually don’t go to then people start to have unusual experiences that even complying with the intention they set for the experience.

Well some people are saying you just find what you expect. Maybe it is, but you still absolutely fascinating.

The interesting thing about this is just taking a few steps, a few meters outside the ordinary you start to find something very different for our lives.

What I find with my clients and my friends when they ask for advice, what is something new you could do? What is something you haven’t done before, something that comes from inside?

I normally follow up the question and try to find out something different. Perhaps a passion from years ago they wanted to pursue but never did and it comes out and sometimes what happens when they fulfill on these actions, suddenly the other problems dissolve.

Or they take on a lesser importance or they kind of sort themselves out or its just very easy to find a perspective that will solve those problems.

At first when I was writing this episode I wrote break the cycle but break the cycle was not right. We aren’t applying force to the cycle. We might identify the cycle but if we try to apply pressure and break the cycle we might actually inadvertently continue the cycle because we are putting energy into it.

That’s what can happen.

However if we move into something new, something unexpected even if it’s just a bit different like talking to someone we haven’t talked to before or picking up the paintbrush or the camera, taking some photos in a way that we haven’t before. Yes. Enjoying some creative pursuit.

Or something different, going out to see a sunset. Maybe you haven’t done that for many years. Maybe you haven’t gone to the beach in many years. Something from within you.

A lot of the time people know intuitively what kind of thing they can do to move forward. What is that thing, what is that little spark of magic, that new thing, that different thing, that unexpected thing that might ignite the fire of wonder.

What is it, can you do it?
