Episode 111
Our Common Humanity
On June 4th, 2020, hundreds of young people took to the streets of Guadalajara to protest the death of Giovanni López. López was arrested by police in the town of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos, about an hour outside of Guadalajara. When his family finally found him, he was dead in hospital, with a bullet in his foot.
The reason given for his arrest was the fact that he wasn’t wearing a face mask. However, with many things in Mexico, sometimes there is more below the surface.
At the protests, people burned police cars, put graffiti on government offices, and set fire to a police officer.
While some of that was happening, Kurt Robinson was there taking photos and trying to talk to protesters and police.
In this episode, Kurt discusses the events, the surprising compassion of the police, and the reasons we might want to have empathy for even those who might oppress us.
