Seek and Ye Shall Find
In the famous Bible verse, we are encouraged to ask, seek and knock, to have our prayers answered. Sometimes it is enough to ask, and sometimes we need to seek and knock.
In another now obsolete expression, it was said that “An ounce of pluck is worth a tonne of luck,” which is to say, dogged determination will get us far more than good fortune alone.
If we find ourselves in a situation where it seems like we will not get what we’re looking for, we might give up. Or we might move forward, and quickly find that any obstacles were only illusions.

So let’s talk about seek and ye shall find. That famous Bible verse.
The other day I told that story about going into immigration office hoping and trying to have faith that I would be able to collect my residency card so I can stay here without legal problems.
I told this to my friend Ana Gaeta and she told my “You know I think that’s another important moral of the story or spiritual lesson. It comes from that bible verse “ask and it shall be given to you. Seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you for everyone who asketh recieveth, he that seeketh finders and him that knocketh shall be opened.”
Ana says look at this its repetitive, perhaps the reason it is repetitive is because yes you must keep trying, keep doing those things because if you really have faith of course you will keep taking action and in some sense we can say the universe or god is testing us.
Saying oh you think you really want this thing? How much do you really want it? Do you want it enough to go out into the world perhaps in a place that might seem dangerous?
In my mind I know this was irrational but I thought they deported me from Mexico once. If I go into the INM are they going to do something mean to me? Are they going to look at my records and deny me or deport me again?
It wasn’t ever really likely but of course it’s easy for me to say that now. That tends to be the thing with a lot of dangers in life, they appear threatening in the moment. Perhaps in hindsight we can see there wasn’t any danger. But when we go and walk out into the wild lands to find the sweetest berries well we do need a little pluck, courage, faith.
So what happened when I was waiting there in the office? It got to about 1:30 or so and they said to us there’s a lot of people here so maybe some would like to come back tomorrow because there is gonna be a wait. In that moment I had already made my decision and it would have been a difficult decision for me if I still had the doubt but I had decided “I am going to wait.”
I had my doubts and thought why don’t I just come back another day or when’s another day to come here when I wouldn’t be so afraid? Of course it’s not likely that day would ever come because we don’t gain more courage for running away from our problems. We gain more courage by looking our problems in the eye and seeing what they’re really made of.
So when the official called me out I thought “I will stay” and not five minutes later I was called to the window and 25 minutes later I received my residency card.
So go ahead and ask. Don’t just ask but seek. Go ahead and knock on that door because who knows what might be waiting behind that door?
Something new, something to bring you to even greater levels of faith.
