A Little Bit Slower

When we do our regular chores such as hanging out laundry, putting our clothes away, or washing the dishes, there can be a temptation to rush through it. We hurry, and try to get to the next thing.

It’s true that these things are to serve a purpose, but perhaps everything that acts as a means is also an end in itself.

By taking our time with every little thing that needs doing, we might find within moments that there is some seed of joy, and with patience we can nourish it.

Welcome beautiful thinkers.

This is how your life is already wonderful. I wanted to talk about going a little bit slower.

Sometimes when I do some laundry I bring in my shirts and ready to fold and roll them to put them in my drawers and for some reason I try to rush through this process to do it quickly as if it is something utilitarian, which it is.

Something practical of course to roll them up and put them in my drawers to keep to be tidy and have my room looking nice. My shirts aren’t left on the bed like a hopeless bachelor.

But its not just something practical. Everything we don might have this practical element but is also has this element of presence, which is also something practical. We can be aware of every movement that we are making and naturally what happens when I roll up a shirt slowly with presence thinking how I am doing it of course it looks a lot neater than if I just hurry through it as if its just something to finish. I try to expand this practice to other elements of my life.

I deliberately brush my teeth with my left hand, my non dominant hand and I try to brush them in the direction making circles. One direction seems more unnatural than the other one.

Just to slow down the process and help myself be aware of every moment. What happens with a lot of people?

When they are young they want to rush through things and get somewhere. When they start a new skill they ask, why can’t I be good now? So impatiently so later looking back on their lives they wonder why didn’t I enjoy it when I had the opportunity?

As the meme says we were happy and we didn’t even know it.

So many things, so many times an experienced person someone who is now an expert at a skill will look back at people just beginning and think they are envious. Enjoying just having the improvement, having those beginning days when everything is new and there is so much possibility and so much waiting to be revealed.

Now we can slow down in those aspects of our life and look around and enjoy whatever stage we are at. As the saying goes getting there is half the journey and every moment on our journeys we can enjoy it taking it slowly with presence, with purpose, with more added practicality because we are learning things well and learning thoroughly.

Move a little slower. Thank you for being aware of your actions and movements and aware even as you are walking down the street you might notice how the soles of your shoes touch the pavement. How the ball of your foot touches first followed by the heel and how you lift up your feet each one moving along.

Thank you for moving a little bit slower.
