Episode 396
God Bless Them
When many people visit Latin America or Latin Europe, they are astounded by the hospitality of the people who go out of their way to chat with you or accommodate you. Their sweet demeanour shows their sweet hearts that cannot be hidden.
Likewise, when we read certain books such as The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, we might notice the tenderness that Covey exhibits in the book. The way he talks about demonstrating compassion with his children reveals his nature.
We can take the time to be grateful for the kindness we receive, and in doing so we might begin to be transformed.
Note: In the episode Kurt refers to the phrase “Whatever you find to do, do it with all your heart”. The source of this phrase is actually not the New Testament – it comes from Ecclesiastes.

I was just thinking about the idea, god bless them.
God bless them.
I was thinking about when I was in Portugal and I was in a restaurant with my friend Amy and it was just a little, like in Mexico we would call it a cocina económica.
An economic kitchen, an economical kitchen. A little family restaurant where you go for a quick and cheap lunch and I ordered something like a sandwich with an omelette on it or a Spanish tortilla on a sandwich.
And I saw someone else had some fried French fries on their plate, and I asked can I get some of those French fries as well? And they were like “Oh no that’s just what we cook for the staff.”
This other fellow a couple of tables over says “Oh, lets get this fellow some French fries.”
And this fellow out of nowhere, I think earlier he said hello and asked me where I was from but was more or less a stranger and he was advocating for me to get some fried potatoes.
And he got me some French fries onto my plate. They had to invent a charge for me because they normally don’t sell French fries. We had a couple sandwiches and a soft drink or whatever.
It was great, really friendly extremely wonderful people in Portugal.
This is an experience I had one afternoon maybe I was in Coimbra. I went to a bakery just as they were about to close and I said “Oh can I try this? What’s this? I’ve never tried this before” I am struggling to speak Portuñol
. Im not exactly speaking Portuguese, Im kind of speaking Spanish trying to bumble my way through the language a little bit.
They start chatting to me and asking where I was from and I would share a little bit about Australia and my travels and how much of a great time Im having here in Portugal.
And they say “Oh great, try one of these I know you have never tried one before.”
And I thought “Oh great, how much do I owe you?”
And they thought its no problem, no charge. They were just happy to hear from me and a bit of my story and give me a little pastry for free just because they like my presence or something. Having a good time with me.
I was also thinking about 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. The late and great Stephen Covey. You read that book, of course it is very potent as a kind of self help guide but he’s also setting this wonderful example in this book. This really sweet example, this sweet Christian man.
You can tell by the way he talks he has this pure and wonderful soul. The way he talks about interacting with his children to try to set a good example for them.
When he makes a mistake he earnestly tries to correct it to maintain the beautiful view his children have of him. He clearly has this wonderful view of the world and you can see this he is kind of expressing this in every part of him which leads us to this principle I like to think about.
In part it probably comes from Don Miguel Ruíz where he says do your best at everything you do.
It goes back to Jesus Christ when our teacher said to us, whatever your hand finds to do do it with all your heart.
Part of the reason is the way we do one thing is the way we do everything.
You can notice this in yourself and in others, if you are doing something half heartedly. Like washing the dishes half heartedly or not giving your all in other parts of your life. If you wash the dishes earnestly and expressing love and care through washing the dishes that will shine through to other parts of your life.
People will say god bless you. God bless you for being so sweet and innocent and pure in all of your actions as it shines through and you will bless them too.
