Gut Feelings

Sometimes we might get a feeling – anxiety, worry, fear – and we’re unsure if it relates to an intuition, or if it’s just our emotions getting carried away. So how can we tell the difference between a gut feeling and a common worry?

In a sense, the worry is noise. We know that we can worry about things whether our worries are justified or not. The problem is how to get to what is below the worry.

So we can process our fears, our insecurities and anxieties, thanking them for being there, being present with them, or breathing through them. When we find ourselves in a place of peace, we can ask if there’s still a question, something a little more subtle at the bottoms of our bellies. That is how we will know.

Welcome, beautiful thinkers. This is a beautiful thought. This is how your life is already wonderful. How you are already powerful, already internally consistent, already a natural born Buddha, already enlightened, already exercising your consciousness.

Now, what was I going to talk about?

There was an interesting question on Tik Tok, the other day, somebody put up this little video talking about how we can tell the difference between an anxiety and a gut feeling.

And they expound, they asked the question, in this video, at the end of the video, the answer is, “I really don’t know.”

So I made a little video in response to that.

I remembered this time when I thought a partner was cheating on me.

And I started to explore this. And noticed I had all of these feelings. In the video, I said, “the whole crew was there.” You know, “the crew”? I mean, fear.

Fear was that insecurity, self doubt, nerves. All of these things, the whole crew.

And I said in the video, this isn’t literally what I did. But I said it in the video, this is real, this is a technique that will probably work for you in a lot of situations. You go through and thank these feelings.

So you say thank you fear for letting me know there’s a possible threat.

Thank you nerves for letting me know to be on alert.

Thank you insecurity, for letting me know there are things in myself, I can work on.

Thank you jealousy for revealing to me what I value.

So all of these things, or what I actually did, I think I just sat in meditation, and I breathed through each of these feelings, all of these, exploring them, allowing them to exist ,and then allowing them to go.

And what I noticed in this situation was when all of the emotions had gone, there still remained this question, it was a kind of an emotion, a different kind of emotion. Yes, this gut feeling.

So that’s basically the technique. That’s a very difficult question, how you know the difference between anxiety and a gut feeling? Because, basically, we don’t need to worry too much about the anxiety, we don’t need to ask ourselves, “does this anxiety actually mean something very profound?”

Because it’s not the anxiety that we’re looking for when we want to know if we’re actually having an intuition. The anxiety might be there either way. So the anxiety is kind of a wash, the anxiety doesn’t tell us one way or another what’s going on, it may just be doing its own thing, it goes out of control.

Sometimes, you know how these things are, if we don’t stay entirely present with our emotions that can get carried away.

So don’t worry too much about the anxiety.

The point is, well, that is to say, if we can dissolve the anxiety, then we can find out what is at the base of it.

And of course we can find peace, we’re going to find peace either way, if we allow it to exist, because that peace is always with us underlying the anxiety and even underlying the gut feeling.

But when we are in that peaceful state, when the peace overcomes us, when we enter into the peace, that is when we can notice more clearly that we do have a gut feeling about a situation.

So these things are real. In my experience the intuition absolutely real.

Just takes a little discernment and a little emotional intelligence to get to the bottom of it, and to figure out what our intuitions really are.
