Why Don’t You Just Go?
At certain dark times in our lives, we might begin to wonder if it’s worth going on. We might start to think about taking our own life, and even seriously considering it.
If we’re in that position, it can become apparent that we really have nothing left to lose. In that case, we could just take off, venturing into the world or into the wild like Alexander Supertramp.
The world is a vast, various, curious place with a lot of people to meet, jungles, deserts and highways to explore. If we’re close to giving up, we may as well find out for ourselves if there’s something out there for us.
So, why don’t you just go?

Welcome, beautiful thinkers!
Let’s talk about this phrase. “Why don’t you just go?”
I was reading this Reddit thread. Somebody was talking about depression.
And this fellow said something like, “You know, when I don’t understand people are depressed, so depressed, they’re actually suicidal, and maybe they actually not just having suicidal ideations, and they have suicidal intentions.”
They actually want to follow through with that grave decision, taking their own life.”
And this fellow said, “Well, if it’s really that serious, like if you’re not sure, that you want to be on this earth, why don’t you just go, not to the beyond, but why don’t you just go somewhere, anywhere, start hitchhiking, take a trip, start walking, start running like Forrest Gump, from one side of the country to the other.”
“You got nothing to lose. If you’ve got nothing to lose, and stands to reason that you might have everything to gain, or at least a whole lot.”
“And you can move through this world without worrying about death.”
There was this story is a little strange story. But this fellow from the United States didn’t know what to do with his life. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to continue it.
He took the money that he had. And he went to, perhaps to Cabo San Lucas, somewhere in Mexico.
And he spent that money on some very unsavory acts: drugs, sex, drugs, sex? Drugs, and sex, is what I’m trying to say. Parties, who knows, perhaps all kinds of debauchery.
And after that adventure, he said, “You know, maybe life isn’t so bad after all.”
No, I don’t think we should follow that example.
But it does show the point very well, that we can go off and have an adventure when we like, if we’re in a tough spot, that we can find a way to create meaning in our life by experimenting, by playing in the world.
Just like in the interview that I did with Arran Rogerson, where he talked about having that freedom to be so alive.
After he discovered competitive running.
He just found like he could be and just play, just experiment, find out what’s going on.
Talk to people, or whatever it is.
I think I mentioned before, a friend, coach of mine used to say to me, “You know, life isn’t what you think it is. Life is a bit more like a high school party, where you can go up and talk to whoever you want.”
And sometimes I do this, like, a couple of weeks ago, I was eating at this Asian restaurant in Guadalajara.
And I have my tray there.
I actually feel like I’m in an American High School movie or something.
And I walked up to two women and I said, “Hey, do you mind if I sit with you?”
Now they said, “No”, they didn’t want me to sit with them. But that’s absolutely fine. This is the thing about it. Like, what is that to be worried about?
Some people tell me they’re worried about rejection, but you know what happens? I mean. That’s like, I went up to them, I asked them, they said, they said, “No, we’re having a private conversation or whatever it is.”
And I said, “Great, you know, have a nice day.” And I went off, and I invited myself and had a good time anyway. What’s the big deal?
We could go and explore and have adventures.
I was thinking about this couple, I met this French couple.
I met them in Paraguay.
But they were here in Mexico, and they hitchhiked across the country.
And they said, “Oh, it’s not that dangerous.
I said, “It could very well be dangerous”, but they didn’t seem so bothered by it.
They said there were so many people who stopped for them.
Maybe they even passed, and then reversed and said, you know, we better pick you up, just to make sure that there are no bad people that pick you up.
And the French couple jump in and travel across the country, enjoying the company, enjoying the hospitality of these beautiful, humble Mexican people.
Just finding out what’s going on in the world.
I wouldn’t recommend going for a hitchhiking adventure like that.
But you know, if you are in that position where you have nothing to lose, why not? Why not see what’s out there for you?
Because there is something out there for you.
I don’t know what it is.
But there is something out there for you.
So why don’t you just go.
