A Little Bit Extra
You’re in the gym. You get to the last rep in your last set of bench press. The weight feels heavy in your hands, and you’re tempted to just put it down, and mark it as a failure.
But something inside you says let’s continue. You wrestle with the bar, suspending it in the air, pushing it to a point of possibility. You grunt and finally push the bar up, extending your arms and placing it back in the rack.
Moments like these, you really feel alive. But they’re not always quite as dramatic.
As a novice meditator, you might sit still just for five minutes. When the timer sounds, you can get up. Of course, nobody is watching or holding you accountable. You could even get up before the timer sounds, and nobody would know.
But you persist, and when the alarm goes off you decide to sit a little longer, just for 30 more seconds to enjoy whatever is happening in your mind and body.
In those moments, you begin to let go of your idea of the person you thought you were. It’s that little bit extra that makes all the difference.

I’d like to talk to you about doing a little bit extra.
I was thinking about one time I took this course with Real Social Dynamics. I’ve talked about this before and we go out to nightclubs and this fellow Alex would coach me on how to talk to women.
He’d push me to talk to women and build my confidence so I could eventually have the hope of finding a wonderful relationship, have more confidence and feel good when talking to people.
So what would happen, I remember it happened at least once… he’d tell me to go talk to those women and tell me a line I could say.
I started to get into a good rhythm of talking to about 3-4 women in a row and it’s going pretty good. Maybe the women leave, maybe I get their phone number or maybe they don’t want to talk to me. Whatever.
So I go back to Alex and I’m like “Hey, I’m gonna go to the bathroom” and he’d say “Ok, but go talk to another group of women first.”
Because of course he knows as a professional what happens is when we get into a rhythm, we start to question.
Is this really me? Can I really do this? Can I really get into that mind state?
That’s a bit different to what I normally am. Can I embrace the fact that I am something different?
What most people would do in that situation is start to make excuses like hey I really need to go to the bathroom.
Of course I did need to go to the bathroom to use the facilities but still its a kind of excuse because it was starting to get a little intense and I was willing enough to go along with it.
The point is, the little bit extra made all the difference.
Also when we were in the gym I said to my friend Kosh about how I get in, do those 5 reps or sets and on the last one, that 25th rep…that’s the one that’s a bit difficult.
And he’s like, that’s the one that really counts, that’s the one that makes the difference.
Likewise if we’re beginning to meditate and as a novice we say I’m just gonna sit still for 5 minutes.
Not gonna think about anything in particular thing or concentrate on a particular thing and we get to the end of 5 minutes and the timer sounds and then maybe we can sit for another 30 seconds.
What will happen then by the same token?
What happens when we practice the Nadi Shodhana which is the ultimate nostril breathing exercise placing the index and middle finger on the forehead applying a bit of pressure. Using the thumb and ring finger to manipulate the nostrils. Breathing in the left nostril and breathing out the right nostril.
And then the other way around.
So what happens when I show this to people and we say we will do it for a couple of minutes. After a minute or so the client will say “I feel a lot better” and I say “Of course, lets continue.”
The thing that made you feel better, now you feel settled and relaxed.
Maybe your anxiety is at a minimum. What would happen if you continue and just do that bit extra?
Another example I thought about in meditation right now to do this episode. I’ve already recorded 3 episodes today.
I could be satisfied with that, that’s a good output. Almost half a week and have this idea to do a bit extra.
And that’s what I do.
Sometimes it’s that bit extra that really counts that really moves us into something different. Moves us to let go of our identity just a little bit to become something new, to transform moving forward in loving power.
A little bit extra of love.
Thank you for listening, thank you for doing a little bit extra in your life, thank you for doing a bit extra to transform and make yourself the best you can be,
Thanks for continuing with your wonderful habits and moving just a bit outside your comfort zone. Have a wonderful day.
