Being Baba Muktananda

by | Aug 11, 2021 | short episodes | 0 comments

In the West, the tradition of guru worship is seen as contrary to the ideal of individualism – so much so, that when people use the term, it is in derision. Perhaps it is in part a difference of values, and in part a misunderstanding of the nature of worship.

In Play of Consciousness by Swami Muktananda, the Guru tells us about his experiences meditating on his guru, Baba Nityananda. Muktananda would rise early, wash himself, and sit contemplating the essence of Nityananda – attempting to identify with the divine essence of his guru.

We might assume that by worshipping the guru, we are diminishing something about ourselves. In fact, an important aspect is to discover the perfect aspect that is apparent in the guru, within ourselves.

Welcome beautiful thinkers.

Let’s talk about being Baba Muknanasdsd so I had for the longest time perhaps for many years I had a aversion with the idea of guru worship.

It seems like you’re putting a person up on a pedastool. I think a lot of people in the west have this aversion to the idea of guru worship and it was a little strange to me when I attended a Siddha Yoga School.

Recently I’ve been reading this amazing book by Baba Muktanandacalled the Play on Conciousness. And he describes the spiritual experiences. It’s kind of interesting because when you look at the back of the book Baba Muktananda says normally traditionally these experiences are not supposed to be shared but now I will share them.

Its interesting that he felt that changed in the course of history or that the world was somehow ready for these kinds of ideas and reading the book is quite fascinating. He describes his relationship with his guru which was of course Nityananda.

So Baba Muktananda is practicing this guru worship which its not exactly worship that is kind of a misnomer because what you are trying to do is you focus on your guru because you recognize the divinity or that special substance or that fundamental goodness in one’s guru.

You’re trying to identify with it or at least thats a key part of how Baba Muktananda describes his process in the book.

He describes trying to imagine himself as asdasdasd, trying to wrap his head around or be open to what it might be like to be Nityananda.

So the other day at some point I let go of some of these reservations. Im telling you this is an interesting stage in spiritual development.

My friend Luis Fernando Mises says to document every time you have a spritual experience because these are things that other people can gain from.

So I invite everyone out there to keep a journal of their spiritual progress because these things are, well they’re beautiful and amazing and sweet pearls of wisdom, condensed diamonds of joy and we can all share in those experiences.

I sat down for an hour of meditation and I was asking the question to myself:

What is it like to be Baba? What is it like to be Baba asdasdad

And after a few minutes one of the key insights that came up is for one thing he doesn’t sit there thinking “what is it like to be myself?”

He certainly does not do that. So I have got to somehow assume that I am asdasdads and somehow assume his essense so I tried to put this thought more in the background as an assumption of who I am being.

It was interesting later because I saw the cover of the book that has Baba Muktananda on it and I did get this impression of “that’s me I identify with this” which is very interesting.

What happened during that meditation I did start to get a glimpse of what is is like to be Baba Muktananda to be this enthusiastic being that welcomes everything.

I was thinking during the meditation I was thinking of the story that dasdadsasd tells which is this story about when Guru Maya received shaktipat which is she received the energy from Baba, the guru’s energy. This is a significiant point of spiritual progress like being admitted into sdasdasdasd Yoga school or other yoga tradition.

Very usual experiences can happen and it’s going to sound stange to some of you who are skeptically minded but sometimes what happens is people have these spontaneous spiritual experiences they have these intense meditation experience maybe receiving visions of all sorts of things, maybe visions of paradise.

Internal feelings of bliss beyond what they have ever experienced before. I guess I shouldn’t talk about it too much. If you are going to receive Shaktipat it is important to kind of set these things aside because everyone experience is different.

My experience of Shaktipat certainly wasnt like that, the kind of fireworks thing. Guru Maya received Shaktipat and had these intense meditations and about a week later her soul had settled down and she’d sit in meditation sitting in silence for about an hour and nothing happened. Just silence for an hour, just resting her mind or doing her best to rest her mind.

She went to Gurumayi Chidvilasananda with Baba and Baba asked how she is going with her meditation and she says “Ah, not much is happening. I sit there in silence for an hour.”

And Baba says “how wonderful, how wonderful so welcoming to whatever happens, if she had said “I sit in silence for 5 minutes” he probably would have been just as enthusiastic because that is the kind of spirit that he was or is if you will.

I had this in my mind and I was thinking about this idea of the Play of Conciousness or actually this kind of entered it into my experience is whatever happens it’s all good. It’s literally all good, we can just welcome any kind of experience. That is the play of conciousness where we are experiencing all these things like colors, emotions and sounds, thoughts and experiences. All of these things and its all good.

There’s nothing to fight with, struggle with or resist. We can welcome it all.

Not soon after I slipped out of that mindset, imposing this dualism on this experience.

Thinking well if it’s all good what happems of I think some of it is bad, that is bad to think that things are bad, right?

It was a glimpse, doesn’t last for long but who knows? The gurus know that if we persist in our spiritual practice we will likely achieve greater spriritual devopment and move into these states of mind more easily, more frequently perhaps until they are permanent and we can see even further than we even imagined from our glimpses.

So the experience I had I hope people persist in spiritual practice because we will always find greater fruits. We might have moments of doubt whether we really can move through our spiritual challenge and can find something worthwhile when we look inside.

As we have more of these experiences we move deeper, deeper into faith.

Knowing that bliss is for us.
