Explore Your Emotions

Getting caught up with life, we might go months without making the effort to feel what’s going on inside ourselves. When we do, it might even seem something foreign. We will likely find some kind of unease sitting in the background.

Now, you are invited to look within. Do you find some residue of past emotions, some grudge of which you haven’t quite let go? Some discomfort waiting, making a subtle noise like radio static?

We can begin to observe the feeling and texture of these emotions, perhaps giving them names in order to better understand them.

Then we check in on them from time to time, eventually finding that they have dissolved, and in their wake there is nothing but clear space.

Welcome beautiful thinkers.

I’d like to talk about exploring our emotions.

You might have heard me say that one key to being happy is actually learning how to be happy. Which is to say if we can learn to deal with our own unhappiness or discomfort, discord and chaos within, whatever it is that holds us back from being happy.

Of course it stands to reason that we can move through that and find a path to happiness.

You might notice if you observe your body and draw attention to body or solar plexus in this moment you might find that there is some underlying current of unease.

Or you might find that you even think about something that happened to you that you blame another person for, a grudge, anger, rage.

That is still lying dormant within you as you bring your attention to those emotions, you might quickly find that they evaporate.

Or perhaps not, perhaps they’re with you for a little longer.

Now let’s explore that, what is that you’re feeling?

Maybe you can give it a name, maybe frustration or discomfort, anger…what is it? What does it feel like? What is its texture?

Is it spiky, smooth, rough or something else?

Maybe something a little difficult to describe.

Now if it doesn’t resolve in the moment then maybe you can come back to it periodically through the day.

Notice your own emotional state, notice the background noise of your own feelings. Can you bring yourself to experience this and notice it without judgment?

With a kind of pleasant space, a space that would allow a plant to grow.

What happens, maybe you return to this feeling for days or weeks and months.

Come back to it to see how it’s doing.

How are you doing little one?

Eventually it happens, it does dissolve or it even unfolds like a lotus bird beginning to blossom revealing a kind of bright energy.

Maybe, it leaves you with a question or an answer.

Maybe it just leaves space.

What is that?

What would happen if you rest your mind in that space where there once was emotion now only emptiness?

What happens if you be with that, sit with that, breathe from that? What happens? What’s left when we explore our emotions?
