Give the Little Man a Hand

On William DeVaughn’s record he reminds us to “give the little man a great big hand” – to notice, respect and congratulate the people in service roles, waiting on tables, cleaning our streets, making food for us.

People might work so hard for us, and often they are so humble or professional, we might have no idea the level of dedication that they apply, working behind the scenes to find a solution for us.

We can all find ways to recognize those people who make the world go around, referring to them kindly, perhaps even by name, or complimenting them for the things they do that make our lives easier.

Good morning every body.

I was just thinking about that song from William Devaughn maybe you’ve heard me mention it before. William Devaughn came up with this album very nicely produced from the 70s filled with these wonderful positive christian messages for Black Americans and the album is called Be Thankful for What You Got.

This particular song I am talking about is called Give The Little Man a Great Big Hand and its about how there are so many people in our lives who help us, serve us, do things for us. Maybe they’re waiters or the clerks at the office store or whatever.

So many people out there patiently doing their jobs like clerks of customer service. So many things we might not notice like behind the scenes and the world moves along because of these people.

So many times it might slip our minds to be grateful for how much work these people do. A lot of the work we might not understand the extent of it.

When I was in Acapulco I went for dinner with my buddy Luis Fernando Mises and his 2 children and I was a little enchanted by Luis as always.

I would notice how he would treat the staff he’d be like “oh, Don David” Mr. David. Rather formal but a way of showing respect to the waiter to acknowledge that he is important.

Theres a lot of these memes that go around that joke about when men call each other king or chief. And this seems kind of funny, the memes are really funny.

But this is the kind of thing that men do for each other to try to acknowledge or respect the power or virility or vitality that men have within them to build each other up and constantly compliment each other.

Of course it’s not limited to men like you can imagine a man embracing his woman and calling her a goddess or whatever combination there is.

In the US there are certain denominations of Islam who will call each other, members of the congregation God just to acknowledge that divinity within them that’s important.

Of course, I hope you join me in acknowledging that divinity or specialness within each of us. The things humble people do or hardworking people do to deliver a service with a smile. They don’t complain often and they do it so professionally that we might not notice how hard they worked to come up with a solution for us. Let us praise those people.

The little man, the little people or the not really little people but that’s how the song goes. Give the little man a great big hand. Let’s build each other up regardless of our position in life give each other congratulations and the highest respect. It’s wonderful to do that.

That’s it.
