Episode 226

In the Periphery

In this moment, we can begin to notice things that were previously unconscious, using all of our senses. We can expand our awareness to become aware of shapes and colors in our peripheral vision, pushing awareness to vision’s boundaries.

Listening carefully, we might begin to hear sounds that we missed – cars passing, the howl of the wind, a distant clock tower striking the hour, birds chirping, and even the sound of our central nervous system.

We continue moving through the senses, smelling and tasting, bringing consciousness to where we are seated or other tactile sensations. Even the secondary senses such as balance, cold or heat are available to us.

How much can you sense right now?

Welcome beautiful thinkers.

I’d like to talk about what’s in the periphery.

The other day once again sitting in the cafe as I normally do and I started to look at what’s going on around me, staring down the street and noticing different parts and aspects of my vision.

Even becoming more aware of my peripheral vision. Trying to push my vision to the furthest parts of it also trying to be aware of what is going on in front of me and noticing the different movements and trying to be aware of the several people crossing the intersection at once.

Noticing all of them. Noticing as well pushing my attention to the parts of my audio percpetions receiving more sounds than at first I realized were present. So I start to notice the sound of the wind or the birds chirping as they often do or even you might hear the sound, the faint ringing which is the sound of the central nervous system in the body.

Moving and influencing your ears ever so gently.

What other sounds, what other things do you notice in your peripheral vision if you try to be aware of your whole vision field at once?

Maybe you also start to notice some certain tactile sensations like the feeling of the seat under your butt or your tongue in your mouth. Perhaps there is even some taste, some smell that has been there some persistently that has somewhat entered the subconscious but when you become present you can notice it again.

Perhaps as you take a walk you become more present of the secondary senses. For example the feeling of balance, do you notice you are too forward or too backward. Or the sensation of heat or cold on your body and perhaps you notice your own thoughts. Whats going on there?

So many things to explore so many things that might casually drop in unnoticed but they can with a little presence come into focus once again. Be part of our complete experience. Living live more fully with more sensations.

Years ago I had a little herb garden, I would keep some herbs in potted plants outside my apartment. I would lean down almost every morning to smell the basil just to get the sensation. Or smell the spearmint or as they call it in Mexico the good herb or good weed, kind of a funny name. They call it that because it can be a pest sometimes but it grows so well and smells so nice.

You can have that opportunity to experience things fully like if you order coffee or tea you can breathe it in fully. Fully experiencing those interesting sensations. Enjoying your senses to the limit, to the periphery.
