Episode 325

One Success

In the short film Popeye The Pizza Man, Popeye delivers a pizza to a fellow obviously in need of comfort, and tries to show him that maybe life is worth living.

Later, Popeye wonders about the value of his actions. He finds himself in these situations, and tries to help, but often it seems futile – people are going to do what they want to do anyway.

Popeye was trying to do something quite difficult, so in a sense if he has one success, that can justify all of his previous efforts.

If you are aiming for something big, perhaps you will find that one success is enough.

Welcome beautiful thinkers.

This is how your life is already wonderful. I was thinking about the concept of one success.

There’s this Youtube Channel called Omeleto where this fellow finds these wonderful short from film festivals and publishes them on this one channel.

A lot of them are very interesting and thought provoking and leave you with an open ending like what was that about? Does it inspire some thought which is wonderful and shows you this diversity in ways that people are thinking and creating which is very cool.

There is one short film on there called Popeye the Pizza Man. Im going to spoil the ending here so if you want to pause here and go watch that short film it’s a little less than half an hour. What happens is this pizza man, they call him Popeye but his name is Arnold and he goes around sometimes just finds himself in an unusual position.

Finds himself with the possibility of intervening with a suicide. Sees a look on someones face and he starts to realize that maybe this person is in a tough position. And he starts telling them some things that might be worth living for and reflecting on the suicide of his own brother. And many times throughout the movie he starts to get a little disappointed because why am I doing this?

What is the point? Why do I even try because people are just going to do what they want to do anyway. At the end of the movie we see that he’s actually vindicated, not really the right word. The value of his actions is confirmed.

He’s sitting in a restaurant and someone says “Hey, it’s alright, your bills been taken care of. That fellow over there said “thanks Ronald” and he looks over there and sees the man and the man is a bit emotional but its obvious from the context of this movie what happened.

This man is one of the people that Popeye has tried to save and it worked. Someone saw things a bit differently because of what Popeye did.

Sometimes they like to say a belief in miracles is validating. If you hold a belief in miracles your entire life and you see one miracle at any point your belief is validated.

Likewise if you try over and over improving your methods, as you try over and over if you are aiming for something really special it only takes once to make it a success. It only takes once to make a difference in someones life and that’s how we make a difference in the world.

Let’s aim for one success, make it a good one.
