Episode 99
Uncertainty is Mystery
Before eating, or at any time of day, we might say a little prayer. “Thank you for the good times, because they reveal our abundance. Thank you for the hard times, because they reveal our strength. Thank you for uncertain times, because they reveal the mystery.”
In a story now thousands of years old, a farmer meets many strange twists of fate – his horses running away, only to return with wild horses – one of which bucks and breaks his son’s leg, causing him to be given a pardon from fighting in a war. At each stage the farmer says, good or bad, who can say?
We might be tempted to think that an event is good or bad. Or perhaps, more accurately, we see that the events of life are too complex and strange for us to give one meaning.
The moral of the story is that we can be unmoved by life’s events, taking them as they come. Maybe we can go one step further – we can enjoy the uncertainty… enjoy the mystery.
