Squeeze A Little Happiness
Some people might tell you that if you have to try to be happy, maybe you’re not really happy. Perhaps this is a romantic idea of happiness, much like the romantic, Hollywood idea of love – that it doesn’t take effort, that it will happen of its own accord, that we don’t have to work on it.
Yet, when we look inside ourselves, directing our attention to the sacrum and the solar plexus, we might find that we observe a little light within us, a simple happiness connecting our body through the vagus nerve.
If we apply a little extra pressure, a little squeeze, we might feel even better, as if we’re tickling ourselves from the inside. Can we will ourselves to be happy?

Let’s talk about squeezing a little happiness.
Some people say if you try to be happy, that’s not happiness or you won’t arrive at happiness just trying to be happy.
I think in many cases that’s true, if we try to force ourselves to be happy, being auto-exigent of ourselves. Like I should be happy, I deserve to be happy, I have all these things why aren’t I happy?
That does not tend to result in happiness but I do think some certain circumstances with the correct thinking, attitude, coming from the right place we can actually succeed in being happy by conciously intending it.
It is very interesting. Sometimes at least for awhile it comes and goes. I have this ability that I learned in meditation where I focus on a particular point in my solar plexus and its like a button I could touch and feel this warmth start flooding into my torso.
If you look right now, bring you attention within to the solar plexus maybe also behind the navel, a bit up through there.
What’s going on in there? Maybe there’s a kind a tingling, a sort of energy. Maybe you do feel that warmth that I was talking about.
In addition there’s 2 kinds of happiness right there. We’ve got a couple but there’s still plenty more to explore.
It’s my belief actually that some people say that there are many more negative emotions in English than positive ones. I think that is because we have so much territory left to explore. There’s a lot about the spirit of the different kinds of happiness, joy, elation, relief, felicity…who am I missing? I’m trying to do the roll call here.
All of these kinds of emotions revery is another one is uncharted territory there that we have to explore and we as beautiful thinkers have that mission or we have that opportunity to find out what is going on with our emotions.
Which new ones can we discover? Maybe we can name them and describe them and find out what’s going on.
Now the other day when I returned from Chiapas and my friend said to me “Oh you’re feeling happy? Why are you happy?”
And I said “Well that’s the age old question, it’ll stick with me for a lifetime.”
In the moment I was feeling that tingly feeling, a kind of star like feeling because its very strong within my belly and solar plexus.
I thought people say that stuff where you can’t try to be happy but what if I do? What happens if I do?
Normally I think we create the conditions for happiness. What if I just go ahead and intend it?
I try to squeeze my solar plexus in a certain way and I did feel happier.
I thought well how strange, I didn’t know I could do that.
Turns out you can do a lot of things when you try.
I could feel this star like energy in a sense sending light to other parts of my body, similar to the sensation that Arron Rogerson described on one episode and I asked him what does it like when you have that freedom in the world?
And he said a light beaming out of me.
Maybe we can feel like that right now. Squeeze the solar plexus a bit, felt like I was tickling myself, an interesting sensation. I’d pick up my doona to spread the sheet. I picked up my doona itself, the duvet, I don’t know what you call it in the US.
It’s like a thick quilt filled with down, a doona a duvet and I would raise it above my head and start shaking it to even out the down.
And it would shake against my solar plexus and I would feel it like tickling me in some way and that’s the kind of sensation, maybe you know that sensation, but that’s the kind of sensation I would get when squeezing a bit, like a tickle but not in a way that makes me laugh but it makes me smile.
Like I was holding back laughter a bit, joy ready to burst out of me. Can you do that?
I think you can, if not right now I think you can learn to do it, observe what’s going on in the belly up to the solar plexus. Find out for yourself if you’re neutral emotionally right now.
Maybe you’re feeling a little flat.
You might find that there is that little pilot light of happiness, waiting to be given a bit more gas and lit up.
Thank you for listening, thank you for squeezing a little extra happiness and enjoying whatever strange and wonderful sensations come to you.
Have a great day.
