Episode 145

A Little Merit

If you’re a good person, you might do things for other people without thinking about what you’ll get in return. If you’re committed, you might even do things for people you don’t particularly like, just because you are in a position to help people.

Of course, the good karma is inevitable. If you do things for people, they will want to help you, speak well of you and recommend your business.

Then one day you will surely find yourself in a situation where you make an error, big or small. Perhaps it’s a small mistake, but because of the context it might have drastic consequences. But maybe, just maybe, people will see the kindness in your heart and be gracious enough to ignore your error.

Welcome beautiful thinkers.

So sometimes I think about people who I’ve done things for in the past, I try to go out of my way to protect them, care for them, guide them in the right direction or somehow offer them resources.

And I think I wish those people would acknowledge it and say thanks. It doesn’t need to be a bit thing, I’m not asking for anything in return, just an acknowledgment would be nice.

Many times people don’t do that. That’s fine, that’s a fact of life but of course we start to have these thoughts maybe we can think on the other side, like how can I show appreciation to someone who has done something kind to me?

What’s gone and slipped through the cracks of our mind? We don’t necessarily think about it too much somehow we take it for granted.

Sometimes my friend Luis Fernando Mises, he made this post on Facebook saying “I try to be good, even when someone who I don’t particularly like asks me for something, if I think its within my capability and I think it will help them, I will do it. Even if I don’t particularly like someone.”

In that case the act of helping somebody is more important, Luis will prioritize that over his opinion which is interesting, it’s nice to be like that. That’s a really good person I guess you would say.

I try to be like that as well and of course, if someone asks me something, I’ll try to help with it.

He doesn’t do it for merit, I don’t do it for merit. Maybe it’s in the back of my mind that maybe someday in the future I’ll get something in return for it.

It’s really very far down the list of reasons to do a good thing. The good merit, the good karma is inevitable, unavoidable.

Somehow the things are going to stack up in our favor when we do nice things for people because people of course will speak well of us and offer good opportunities because they know we are people of caracter.

We do our best to make this world a slightly better place and that will lead to opportunities in the long run.

It won’t be obvious.

Sometimes if I find myself in a difficult situation Luis says to me “Well listen. I think you’ve accumulated a lot of good karma, if you get yourself into a rough spot maybe it will get you through.”

And I think its a nice idea but if I find myself in a tough position, if I end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, or make a mistake at the wrong moment, say the wrong thing, put my foot in my mouth or somehow make a mistake that could be catastrophic people might just, maybe kind enough to overlook it.

To be gracious enough to think I can see in your face, in your heart that you did not mean that in a bad way and I will forget about it.

Thank you for listening, thank you for doing you best to be good and remembering how hard you tried to be good cause when times get tough that idea will be very comforting.

Have a wonderful day.
