Episode 436

Is It Sad

If you tell your colleagues that you visited a friend in hospital on the weekend, they might have varied reactions.

One of your colleagues might say “Oh, that is depressing”.

Another colleague might say “That is so sweet that you were there to support your friend.”

We might say that both of these perspectives are equally as valid, but they’re not equally beneficial for us.

Which way would you prefer to see things?

Welcome, beautiful thinkers. I’d like to ask you this question. Is it sad?

The question is about positive thinking, or how we see a situation.

Many years ago, I was in a position, a friend of mine had an eating disorder.

And I went to the hospital to see her and try to cheer her up.

I gave her a book that I hoped would aid in her personal development, encourage her to look inside herself, and perhaps find the value that lay within.

I remember on Monday, I went to work. And my colleague asked me how my weekend was, I said, “Is good. No, I went to the hospital to see my friend.” And he said, “Ah, that kind of puts a damper on things. Or then that is a little bit depressing.” I said, “No. Well, I was a little puzzled.”

Because from my perspective, this was good news.

It was good news that I’d gone to see the gone to the hospital to see my friend, it was good news that I had the chance to support somebody who is in need.

It was good news, because I had chosen those actions.

Because somebody else was in a bit of a pickle. And I was in a position to help and I did.

So that is good to me.

Or another example, the other day on Tik Tok, I saw this video where there’s a grandfather , he is living with his son, and grandchildren, of course. And the fellow is getting old and he can’t even remember what happened to his house.

It’s not even entirely sure where he is.

He might be about 80 years old.

And the son is patiently explaining to him, “Oh, yes, don’t worry about your house, you sold your house, you can have a look, you’ve got the bank statement or the receipt in your wallet there.”

And the father is like, “Oh, Okay. Let me have a look.” And he finds the note from the bank and it says how much money he has in his account, and he is like, “Oh, I guess everything is okay.”

The son patiently calms him down and lets him know that everything is fine.

And yes, people in the comments said, “This is so sad.” Or some of them said that. And some of them said, “This is so sweet that you’re so patient with this old fellow.”

So, which is the part we should focus on?

Of course, tragedies are going to happen.

Of course, we’re all going to get old.

Of course, sometimes our friends are going to be in need.

So which do you want to focus on?

You want to focus on the tragedy and say it’s sad?

Or do you want to focus on the people who help as, I think it was Mr. Rogers, Fred Rogers, the first Mr. Rogers, not Carl Rogers.

Mr. Rogers said to us look for the helpers.

So in any tragic situation, we can look for those people who are doing right, who are putting in that extra effort to make the situation easier.

And that is going to help us realize the power of the human spirit.

So I asked you, is it sad when something happens?

Or is it delightful that we have an opportunity to help?
