Just Below the Surface
Perhaps in this moment, there is some feeling within you which you have tried to ignore. Some feeling that is just on the edge of your awareness, that perhaps you’ve just accepted as part of the background noise of your soul.
You might have accepted it as part of who you are, not questioning it, and not being fully aware of it.
What happens when you bring it clearly into focus, allowing it to come into view, without forcing it?

Let’s talk about what’s just below the surface.
The other day, Sunday, I went to a cafe by my house and walked to the tables outside and sat down. As I was sitting down I started to have this unusual feeling, this unease on the border of my consciousness. At first I guess maybe I had a little bit of aversion to it but then I thought “Hmm, let me lean into that and lets see what’s going on there.”
It was like this existential irritation, anxiety or this feeling of I don’t know exactly who I am.
As I moved further into it I had this affirmation in my head or this little voice saying something like “Yeah, that’s it.”
As if part of the key of knowing who I am is to embrace the idea or the felling of not quite knowing what I am. Similar to the feeling described that’s mentioned many times in Carl Roger’s On Becoming A Person.
I thought that was very curious and I wondered how long that feeling had been sitting there, undressed without having my awareness applied to it.
And while I think my intuition is like 10-12 hours following the events of the previous night I can’t really know for sure because it’s in my subconscious and before that in my unconscious.
There’s no way I can really know, I can only have a strong suspicion.
I wonder, how many things might just be on the edge of our experience, just on the edge of our awareness or just below the surface.
Jungian metaphor for the unconscious is always water. Almost always a lake, pond, river. Perhaps we could take that first step to wade into the river.
Something might bubble to the surface. What is it? What is it? What is it? Just on the edge of your experience. Something just a little different, just a little alien, a little unacknlowedgled piece of ourselves that might give us some perspective, some insight into the nature of what we really are.
Just below the surface, just out of view, what do you feel there?
