Life is Like That

In the song by Mexican band Elefante, we are told that life is capricious, sometimes light and sometimes dark, it takes from us, gives to us, brings us up and lets us down. And occasionally it gives us exactly what we need.

Reflecting on our lives, we might notice when life has been like this to us. We can probably think of examples of each one.

If we know this in advance, we can be better prepared emotionally, to remain cool-headed even when we receive trials or unearned successes.

Welcome beautiful thinkers, this is how your life is already wonderful.

I was just thinking about this song, I have been thinking a lot about this song that I heard at karaoke. The song by the Mexican band Elephante.

A band coming out of Mexico City in the 90s and ended up winning a grammy for a 2005 album.

And the song is Así es la vida or life is like that.

That’s what life is like.

The verses are a bit depressing I guess but the chorus is quite lovely and you find an interesting description of life. I think it depends on how you look at it too cause some people might and think this is quite bitter.

I think its quite accurate.

Así es la vida, de caprichosa
A veces negra, a veces color rosa
Así es la vida, jacarandosa
Te quita; te pone; te sube; te baja y a veces te lo da

So what that means life is like that, that’s what life is like. It’s capricious that is its whimsical, sometimes it’s black, sometimes its the color of a rose. That’s what life is like.

It’s like a jacaranda. Its continuing the description of colors so it’s like describing life. The color of a jacaranda, it takes from you, puts upon you. It brings you up and brings you down and sometimes it gives to you. Maybe you can imagine looking back on your life and you can imagine when life has taken something from you.

Perhaps in the moment you felt that was unjust or unfair and you didn’t deserve that. With reflection you notice later when life took something from you that somehow that was a valuable experience.

That somehow those things had to happen.

Sometimes life puts thing upon you. Maybe you can think about a time when you were imposed upon. When life gave you a responsibility that wasn’t exactly fair, was it ultimately valuable when you had that extra responsibility? It brings you up.

Might have even been some of it so humorous when life brought you up because maybe you thought you were bringing yourself up but as Jordan Peterson says you were just riding on a wave. You are not the wave.

Life brings you down, and the same thing applies we might assume also that when life brings us down that we are bringing ourselves down. That perhaps its a twist of fortune.

My friend Luis Fernando Mises likes to say that life is like a Ferris wheel. Life is like fortunas wheel, sometimes you are on the top and sometimes you are on the bottom. That wheel of fortune spins and sometimes life really gives you what you want and what you need.

Sometimes what you want and need aligns perfectly with what life is giving you.

How about that?

What a blessing when that actually happens?

What can you say about your life looking through these things?

If you reflect on your life doing this little excersize than you know it is true. Life is capricious, it might take from you and give to you, impose upon you. Bring you up and bring you down.

Knowing that what should our attitude be about life? What should our belief be? What should our reaction be when something unexpected does happen to us.

Thanks for reflecting on your life, for being conscious of the nature of the world. About our lives, of fate perhaps.

I will talk to you soon.
