Episode 183

Phrase it Positively

It’s wonderful to take the time to introspect to discover what our own hidden beliefs and expectations are. Sometimes when we improve our beliefs, there is still another simple step we can take in order to polish them further.

For example, many people spend countless hours arguing with others on the Internet. Their unspoken belief is “It is my responsibility to make sure people are correct!” or “It’s my duty to make sure people understand my point of view and see things my way!”

While we can take responsibility for our communication, ultimately we do not have control over how people see the world. So a more realistic belief is to say “It is not my responsibility to correct strangers on the Internet.” Naturally, as the belief is more realistic, it causes a lot less frustration.

However, in a sense that belief is diminishing our own power. Taking it one step further, we can say “I trust the Divinity and intelligence of others to figure things out.” With beliefs like these, we can at once affirm respect for others and for ourselves.

Welcome beautiful thinkers.

I’d like to talk to you about phrasing things positively.

I was thinking about as a consequence of preparing this CBT workshop I did at The Greater Reset that I did down in Zijuantanejo, Guerrero.

I was preparing this and I thought about phrasing beliefs positively.

I remembered something that happened when I changed my mind. I used to spend a lot of time arguing with people over the internet trying to change their opinions and trying to make them see the free market is beneficial and not evil.

Or there’s more to economics than government action or whatever it was and I spent a lot of time that way.

Occasionally I did get through and later people would say thanks for taking the time to do that.

In retrospect…Once I was on Facebook complaining about how people weren’t understanding things from my perspective and my friend Link left this comment with these key questions.

I see why you’re doing this, what’s the benefit of why you’re doing this?

I know there are more effective forms of activism if you’re trying to change people’s minds inspiring people or whatever it is and I was a little taken aback,

All the same I was able to at least accept or allow the space for this in my mind even though in the moment I as a bit offended.

I said that these were great questions and that I would think about it.

I did think about it and the result was as I said to link a few months later after reflecting. I said “I guess I used to think it was my responsibility to correct people or make them see it my way.”

Now I say its not my responsibility to make sure everyone in the world is correct and Link said “Another way of looking at is, a gentle way of correcting someone or suggesting them to something, gently leading them. Nice of him to do it in this way.

Another way of looking at it is you can trust the divinity in them to figure it out.

So they have mental resources and social resources, all interactions and things to look up on the internet. Maybe they can figure it out without me. At least I don’t need to play a specific role in that process by running around and correcting people.

So through these three stages:

1) I have this idea where I need to correct people

2) Where I say its not my responsibility, in a sense denying my power.

3) Is affirming something in their divinity.

Instead of denying my power and responsibility I am affirming their power, their divinity.

Another time I was talking to my friend about working out and building muscle in the gym about how I was excited how my girlfriend would notice when I’d come back from a trip with more muscle and she’d be like sexy man or whatever.

My friend said tat’s good cause she notices your making moves so she will try to keep up with you.

And once again I said yes or another way of looking at it….

Which he’s right to keep a woman you have to keep her on her toes but another way of looking at it is lets try to phrase this positively.

Yes another way oof looking at is I could inspire her. Maybe she’d look at me and think if he can improve himself, so can i.

That’s this technique where we might come up with a belief which is more healthy. Think of how to phrase it more positively in a way that feels empowering.

So if you’ve moved on with the belief perhaps you can think about how to make it even more shiny and outstanding that its not just that you’re letting go but affirming the creation of something wonderful.

Thank you for listening, thank you for reflecting and thank you for investigating yourself and exploring your internal world to make your beliefs conscious and beautiful.
