Pleasure Doing Business With You

If you live in the developed world, it’s likely you often expect a high level of service with any product that you purchase. However, if you live in the developing world, it’s likely that whenever you buy something, there is a certain phrase or mentality that is never far from your mind: “Buyer beware.”

It can be difficult to find people who are at once competent, honest, and agreeable. When the stars do align, when we can do business in a way that benefits both parties, and we can enjoy the other’s company when we do it, that is both practical and pleasurable.

Then we can say with enthusiasm “It is a pleasure doing business with you.”

I was thinking about the phrase its a pleasure doing business with you.

It’s kind of a pleasure to think about it because its like if you do have that experience of pleasurable business where someone you enjoy talking to and someones company who you like and enjoy and respect you have the opportunity to do something mutually beneficial.

That’s actually pretty special. Something practical and enjoyable, its a kind of sweet spot that I hope we can all attain in our lives.

Sometimes I think of course in some countries there is a way of doing things, certain places. Like here if I go to the Plaza de Technologia, the technology plaza one of the them in Guadalajara they might try to do something shady like sell a device that doesn’t work.

When I go back I might receive a Bangladesh shutter warranty where they close the shutters and pretend they don’t hear you and wait for you to leave.

That can happen in certain parts of the world, no such thing as aftermarket sales support.

It is good, we might not realize it but it is something quite modern the idea of customer service or the idea of supporting a product after you’ve sold it.

In many countries you get 2 year warranties. International countries will still give support after 2 years or more.

As much as I can criticise companies like Microsoft who sold me this laptop but they were willing to replace it when the battery started to expand.

These are the sort of things you know, to be honest I had some problems trying to get that through and get misleading information. It wasn’t always a pleasure doing business with them but they did come through with the goods and I had conversations with nice people in the Philippines in the mean time.

A few hundred years ago what happened I think it was in the US the quakers when they saw all this curruption or the fact that people would sell garbage and hype it up like a good product but really sell something inferior.

A lot of quakers said well that just won’t do. I am a christian and I believe in honesty and integrity and that must mean if I say if I will provide a product of quality then I will certainly fulfill it.

I promise, my yes will be a yes. That’s exactly what they did.

We might not realize but perhaps it’s actually an important source of the level of customer service that we expect today because there were these bold and full of integrity people willing to go against what was accepted in a society and try to do something better.

I also think about a friend Luis Fernando Mises and how he promotes servant leadership.

It’s not like if your a manager you can pull rank and tell people what to do, you try to get people to get along. Try to build relationships within a team so people admire and respect you so that you can show them that you admire and respect their opinion just as Luis talked about in the recent interview I did with him.

He was talking about how his boss Dwane always asks him for his opinion even though he was very much the junior consultant. He didn’t have a lot of authority, Dwane showed Luis how much he respected his opinion, his work ethic among other things.

I also think about with my wonderful assistant Lily. I could claim that I am her boss but that’s not how I see our relationship. I see myself more as a client and she is doing a service for me. And I pay her for it, I try to pay her well for it.

Because I had that perception about the way we do business there’s not a lot of conflicts. We try to give each other feedback and have open communication and sort our problems when we have problems.

My priority is not bossing someone around, my priority is getting the job done and getting the podcast up on time so people can hear it or enjoy it.

That’s what I care about my top priority.

Isn’t it wonderful?

I know a lot of you have had some jobs where we did have a bad boss, isn’t it wonderful when we do have that lovely, that pleasure of doing business where we can have mutual respect and benefit. We can enjoy getting something done with somebody. erat, accumsan id imperdiet et, porttitor at sem. Donec sollicitudin molestie malesuada. Donec sollicitudin molestie malesuada.
