Episode 188

Rosebud

In Orson Welles’ famous movie Citizen Kane, Kane gets to the end of his life having created media empires, built lavish estates, married a beautiful woman, and so many other things. Then at the end of the film it’s revealed that his last words referred to his dear toboggan “Rosebud”, that he kept as a child – the simple memories of playing in the snow.

Every day we might be creating pleasant memories, enjoying moments with a friend or times of solitude, seeing a sunset or with others. If we set the intention, we can fully embrace those moments, savour them, and save that simple feeling in our hearts.

Welcome beautiful thinkers.

Let’s talk about rosebud. Many of you remember what’s louder than the greatest film in history, Orson Wells. Im struggling to find the title on the tip of my tongue but what happens is Citizen Kane does all these things, runs these newspapers and media organizations

He creates this paradise, this big estate, has a beautiful wife and does all these travels. He’s a character based on Orson Welles living this extravagant life and extreme lifestyle and then on his death bed he says the word rosebud.

A journalist goes around and tries to find what this word could possibly mean and well to spoil the film, it’s been 7 years or something. If you haven’t seen it yet, do that.

What happens is they’re taking down his estate and find a toboggan and throw it into the furnace. On the toboggan is the word rosebud so of course Citizen Kane had so many powerful eccentric memories dominating the world and expressing himself in these strange things.

But in the end what was most important to him was this simple memory of being a child and sliding down hills through the snow.

Today as I was in the gym with my buddy Chris I was stretching and using a foam roller for myofacial release and extend my side on this thing and release the tension in the muscles in my flank.

Just thinking about that, being there with my friend and doing something good for us that we enjoy, spending time together and listening to music and exercising.

I thought what a wonderful moment, so nice to be there with my friend doing these things. Little magical moment.

A few weeks we went out to tads dad about 2 hours outside of Guadalajara and as we were walking or went on this very light hike we look out and see this sunset with all those purple and lavender tones and orange and tangerine and mandarin tones.

Adam thought Ok Im going to stop for a second and absorb this moment and she stopped and waited and focused on the moment and did her best to commit it to memory. Something special to remember for a long time.

Maybe if we look just a little we might find these moments. They might be extraordinary, they might be a little ordinary, they might be simple. Something pleasurable in the mundane. Something sweet enough to enjoy so as the years pass we might recall those moments and again feel simple happiness of a life well lived. Simplicity.

Whats a moment you can think of in your life, a simple moment to look back on fondly. What does it feel like?

Thank you for listening, thank you for remembering those moments and savoring those moments when they come up

Have a beautiful day!
